Madison Photographer | Wish You Were Here, Year 2, Week 24

We are a group of 23 international photographers. Now into our sophomore year, each week we share an image from a moment in our own personal world as if we are sending virtual postcards to each other. I find the curating to be an extraordinary piece of the art itself; the images take on a life that seem to speak to each other as they flow from one to the next. A visual dialogue. However, the only person who sees our individual images ahead of time is the curator. She makes it downright magical.

I have this shot scene in all seasons–with my phone, with a family point and shoot, and with the big camera. We don’t have assigned seating at our house–it really rotates like musical chairs. Jack is nearly always shirtless at breakfast–even with -14 degree temps on the other side of those windows.  It may just appear to be a snapshot, but there are hidden little nuggets about each of my kiddos.  Not only do I need to buy two different kinds of yogurt, Jack eats his first, Charlie eats his last (you can tell by the spoon positions!). Ben won’t touch yogurt with a 10ft pole, and I’m actually amazed he’s allowed himself be sandwiched between two people eating yogurt. That’s progress.  Charlie drinks his juice first, Jack is last.

Composition-wise, I love how Charlie is a righty and Jack is a lefty and together they bookend the picture with their forks in hand….and both shirtless here. Ben in the middle–to be beat of his own drummer.  And then I’m so drawn to their sleepy body language, bright summer sun streaming in behind them, and that pop of yellow in the juice, yogurt, eggs, and bunting just ties it all together.

Three brothers eat breakfast together. Two shirtless eating eggs, one in the middle drinking orange juice.

You must check out how this image fits with the others this week: Wish You Were Here, Year 2, Week 24.
