Home
Once upon a time a baby was born to two pretty badass people. They lived deep in the heart of the city, in a charming white home with friendly flower boxed windows. They were within steps of an azure lake and an envious skyline. Spring had finally arrived, bringing chartreuse buds, canary yellow tulips, and pink blossom arches.
Beautifully manicured beds emerged in the garden. A chicken coop was anchored in the backyard in a perfect sight line to Roland’s nursery window. Some day he will toddle out to gather warm, speckled eggs in his dimpled hand. But not today.
Today is spent adorably cooing and stretching and yawning and growing.
He wakes with a two fists and hearty closed-eyed yawn. Mama Gwen gingerly pulls him from his downy nest and makes way to his nursery. In a room with stark white birch trees & a full moon against cobalt walls, a perched owl guards the space while Roland gets a fresh change. One fierce curious cat stretches up the window sill to spy on chatty robins.
Ryan pours a cup of coffee while another fierce curious cat watches from the kitchen floor. Her tail flicks and swishes. Ryan makes his way to a bold green room where Gwen is finishing nursing, and there they begin stories of life before Roland. He lies on his dad’s lap, wide-eyed and calm, while Ryan and Gwen share happy, tired smiles.
We stroll outside, taking in all the sights and sounds of lively May morning. Neighbors are dusting off canoes, children are playing on porches, cars with radios pumping through the open sunroofs pass. Roland snuggles against Gwen, the kissing sun, spring chatter and melodic walk put him to sleep.
The new busyness of newborn life puts us back inside for more diaper changes, more nursing, more swaddling, more holding. It may feel mundane at times, but it radiates authenticity. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
I will never tire of a newborn documentary session.
Here are Gwen’s thoughts on our in-home newborn documentary photography session:
When I was pregnant, I thought I wouldn’t want newborn photos. Of course, as soon as our son was born I felt a sudden need for a professional to capture our little nugget (but without baskets or fluffy blankets or random props). As soon as I saw Jen’s website, I knew her style would be perfect. We quickly coordinated a session and it was honestly a pleasant way to spend a beautiful spring morning. We immediately felt comfortable with Jen. The pictures she took are amazing and every aspect of our experience with her was great.
xo, Jen
