I met Louis sixteen fresh hours after he was born, and that gift is not lost on me. That Life Awe sticks with you and it’s such a joy to document. Emily was bright-eyed and looked so content in the beautiful scene. Andy confidently changed and swaddled and swayed Louis while narrating the story of his son’s arrival. I love how college football played silently on the screen above, and the room cluttered with take-out, coffee, congratulatory flowers, apples, and iPhones fit perfectly in this temporary housing on the newborn floor. Andy’s parents arrived shortly before I did–excited and teary and all things lovely to meet their first grandchild. The happiness in the room was nothing short of palpable. In the mere hour I was there, I could document a snippet of joy & love & realness of a time that is incredibly fleeting.
I seek out the ordinary details because I believe that is what we will be drawn to later: a month, a year, a decade, the day Louis leaves for college. Andy may very well still be wearing that Michigan sweatshirt in twenty years, but images of ourselves, our phones & laptop, and the room itself may spark a stronger shared memory of this monumental day. Emily & Andy, wishing your beautiful new family all the love.
It really all feels so best.
Thank you so much, Emily & Andy & Louis!
