We were waiting for spring. Weren’t we all?
We rescheduled in hopes of some super saturating greens and bright billowy yellows to release us from the dreariest, longest winter we’ve encountered. Aaaaaand that didn’t happen.
Yet. There is still light, there is still play, there are still books & light sabers, and tumbling and teeth brushing. As much as we want to forget the winter that failed in kindness, we endured it, lived our Wisconsin lives in color, continued to love & grow & move in the world around us. Truthfully, that’s all worth remembering.
Five months ago this super chill family added their newest member, adorable Max. I have such a soft spot in my heart for Three Kid Crews. Max steals your heart in a nanosecond, and I’m always fascinated by the swirling cacophony the third is born into verses the first child. So, while Max was surely an elephantine change to family dynamics, there are many other noteworthy moments occurring in their early 2013 space. Isabel is seriously rocking the toothless look and taking reading & soccer & tree-climbing & hula-hooping by storm. And Luca recently graduated to an enviable mid-century Danish modern-like big boy room & bed with his very first pillow. It is with such sweet endearment that you can see him holding on to just a bit of that transition with a paci gently held in his hands while sporting an immensely proud posture of Big. [Both Susie & I had the same reaction. With hand over heart: “Awwwww!”]
I adore documenting everyday life, and this superbly good looking family (seriously, go check & come back. Go on. I’ll wait.) is a perfect example of just letting the kids be who they are, doing their thing, and allowing me just work around their beautifully chaotic life. Had we orchestrated it any other way than just that natural unfolding we wouldn’t have Luca taking a toothbrushing break or a cheerful pillow toss or all the ordinary things that make up their life right now: Lego table in mid-construction, Luca’s book blowout of must-be faves, a glimpse of Isabel’s room, where trophies and jewelry are getting top billing.
So, while we rescheduled & begged to be outside with emerald hedges, we would have missed a lot of the elements in their stomping ground that lends structure to this part of their story, a chapter that gives so much reference to today.
And today, as it is, is perfection.
Susie shared her thoughts on working with me:
Jen came to do our session when our third child was about three months old. Our household was crazy and chaotic but full of love for the last addition to our family and Jen was the perfect person to document it. It wasn’t the best of April days so we opted for mostly indoor, and because of that she was able to capture the kids in their own setting and got shots that I normally don’t “see” in our busy lives. Her photos are touching, funny and most of all beautiful. I am already planning the next session so she can again document this special time in our lives.
