I’m pretty sure you know how I feel about storytelling, so it should be of no surprise that I was completely taken with Madison’s newly emerged artist and writer, Soyoung Kim.
The day Soyoung released her blog with 100 Cups of Tea I was immediately drawn to the simplicity of the work, yet enamored with the story. She used strips of her own manuscript to construct one hundred papier-mache tea cups–a fabulously poignant detail, yet she had me at the first sentence of her blogpost.
The bell.
Chai.
Her mother.
Without delay, I had to know more about her work, and was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit her light-filled studio space and chat the morning away. It was such a joy to listen to her talk about her work & experiences! Formally trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Soyoung is first an author with two novels under her wing. While currently seeking an agent, she shares her gift with her readers in her storytelling blog entires, sometimes giving us lovely snippets of her newest novel & accompanied rich painting piece. Influenced by Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes, she began creating intensely vibrant, thought-provoking mixed-media surrealism and has recently focused on the captivating papier -mache project. Her art was locally displayed at Hatch Art House this winter, and I just know you’ll be seeing more of it. Not only is her current work is available for sale, she can also be contacted for commissioned pieces.
Meet Soyoung, and be sure to read her perspective on working with me.
Lovely, yes?
