Wintry Day

It’s the beginning of Wisconsin winter.  We’ve had some snow, but not enough to really play in yet.  Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is coming, which brings a new interest of excitement to this growing family!

Mother smiles at 1 year old boy in a home living room.

Grandpa is outside the window, diligently working on a gorgeous new deck and slide for the kids.  She watches and enthusiastically waves with a big grin when he notices his window audience.

The hand shadow falls on her face. One year old boy in the background is focus while young girl in foreground is out of focus. 1 year old boy examines a puppy stuffed animal

She pulls her little stuffed puppy over to the drawing table. As her model, she begins to illustrate his face, ears, and eyes.

Meanwhile, he explores the Christmas tree since the first time since he was a newborn! The lights and ornaments are so new to him, sparking curiosity in this big, glowy tree in his living room!

We went outside to explore the snow. The leaves were gone and just a thin, crispy layer of snow on the ground. The air was brittle, but the sun cut through the trees, leaving the yard aglow.

Back in the toasty house, the kids help wash dishes. Garlic presses are more fun than toys 🙂

My approach was based on the foundation of this quote from William Martin:

Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.

This is everything. Let me capture your ordinary.
