Summer Baby

Some sessions write themselves.

We started in the kitchen — flour on the counter, strawberries piling up next to the whipped cream, and William with very strong opinions about the pancake-flipping technique. There is something about a pancake morning that slows a family down in exactly the right way. Nobody is rushing anywhere. Benjamin is warm and small and passed between arms like the most precious thing in the world — which, of course, he is.

And then the dinosaur costume appeared.

William decided the best way to welcome a baby brother was to roar at him in full dinosaur regalia and pretend to eat him. Benjamin was unmoved. The rest of us were completely delighted. This is the kind of moment you cannot plan, cannot pose, and absolutely cannot recreate — and it is exactly why I do this work.

The morning moved outside into the kind of summer day that makes you remember why you live in Wisconsin. William made his way through the garden while the pea trellis climbed on tripods and the purple clematis did exactly what purple clematis does on a warm July morning — stopped everyone in their tracks. Benjamin slept through all of it, tucked in and unbothered, while his family moved and laughed and grew around him.

This is what a newborn session looks like with me. Not a basket. Not a bean bag. Just your people, your morning, and whatever wonderful chaos your kids bring to it.
